Where It All Began

One album led to the rest…

How "Manipulator" by Ty Segall Made Me Fall in Love with Psych Rock

Published on 07/31/2023

Psych rock, a genre that effortlessly transports listeners to another realm with its mind-altering melodies and hypnotic rhythms, has always intrigued me. But it wasn't until I was shown the album Manipulator by Ty Segall, but my pals Jodi and Steve, that my love for this genre truly blossomed. From the moment I hit play, I was captivated by the magical world Segall created through his music.

Released in 2014, Manipulator instantly became a definitive album within the world of psych rock. The moment the first track, "Manipulator," hit my eardrums, I was transported into a euphoric state of musical bliss. The album possesses an intoxicating energy that's impossible to resist, drawing you deeper and deeper into its psychedelic soundscape with each passing second.

One of the standout qualities of Manipulator is Segall's ability to blend various influences into a cohesive and unique sonic experience. From 60s garage rock to glam and even hints of punk, he weaves together a tapestry of sounds that feels simultaneously timeless and refreshing. The album serves as an homage to the genre's roots while pushing the boundaries and creating something entirely its own.

As I delved deeper into Manipulator, it became evident that it was an album that demanded to be listened to with full attention. Each track tells a story, whether it's the infectious groove of "The Singer" or the wild and unpredictable journey of "Feel." Segall's songwriting prowess shines through, with introspective and often enigmatic lyrics that leave room for interpretation and personal connection.
What truly sets this album apart is its ability to seamlessly transition between dreamlike melodies and explosive bursts of energy. Tracks like "Tall Man Skinny Lady" and "Susie Thumb" showcase Segall's mastery of dynamics, luring you into a trance-like state one moment and then jolting you awake the next. The album's production is rich and layered, allowing every instrument to shine and take you on a sonic adventure.

Beyond the music itself, Manipulator serves as a gateway into the wider world of psych rock. This album acted as a catalyst for my exploration of psych, what started it all for you?
